Ferrari’s Future EV: Everything You Need to Know

The literal “Ferrari of electric cars” could be unveiled as soon as next year.

·

Ferrari is no stranger to electrified propulsion; hybrid engines powered 44 percent of the vehicles Ferrari sold in 2023. What we haven’t seen yet is Ferrari’s first all-electric vehicle, even though we know one is coming. The Italian brand has been tight-lipped about it, but we should see it unveiled in the near future.

Here’s what we know so far about the first Ferrari EV.

When will the Ferrari EV arrive?

In November 2023, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna confirmed that development for Ferrari’s first EV is ahead of schedule. The car is on track to launch sometime in the fourth quarter of 2025, but it may be 2026 before it arrives in volume (or to America). There’s no confirmed reveal date yet, but it could be significantly before the production launch — perhaps as early as this year.

The new EV will be very much a Ferrari

Ferrari is not rebadging its EV or sub-contracting it out to Magna Steyr. The Ferrari will be built by Ferrari at its new Maranello EV plant, which is scheduled to go online in Summer 2024.

What kind of body style will the Ferrari EV have?

That’s a very good question. We don’t know the answer yet. Ferrari has only said the vehicle will be a “true Ferrari” and “leverage the racing know how.”

A Ferrari patent for an EV spotted in 2022 showed a two-seater sports car layout. Ferrari would store the battery packs behind the driver, which would mimic the weight distribution of a rear mid-engine vehicle and allow the car to be lower to the ground with better aerodynamics than if it ran on a skateboard platform.

But there have also been some rumblings Ferrari’s first EV could be more of a Purosangue-like crossover. This, conceivably, would broaden its appeal — and perhaps give Ferrari a bit more time to build a true EV sports car.

Ferrari was spotted benchmarking a Tesla Model S Plaid

Ferrari has been spotted testing Tesla’s Model S Plaid sedan, which packs 1,020 horsepower, accelerates from 0-60 mph in a claimed 1.99 seconds and can hit a top speed of 200 mph. We don’t think Ferrari is building a sedan. But that benchmarking is a good bet that — as with internal combustion — Ferrari is planning for its EVs to sit at the apex of the performance spectrum.

Ferrari’s first electric car should hit America by 2026. Details about it have been scarce but we can expect the new car to deliver high-end performance and style like a typical Ferrari.
