Residual value — a.k.a. “how much will this sucker be worth when I’m done with it” — is one of the main concerns people have when buying or leasing a car. Which cars have the best resale value? Well, J.D. Power has just published its 2022 U.S. ALG Residual Value Award winners in no fewer than 29 segments. There were a couple of major upsets, like the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door scoring higher than the Lexus LS 500, but plenty of predictable winners, as well.

Porsche knows you better than you know yourself
Porsche has incorporated artificial intelligence into its online configurator. The system purportedly learns based on previous data and suggests additional (and in Porsche’s case, probably pricey) options with 90 percent accuracy. The true test will be whether it can weed out the true 911 buyers from the hordes of lurkers and fantasists killing time building their dream cars.

What’s the Forester Wilderness like to drive?
Plenty acceptable. Driving involvement isn’t the name of the game here (if you want that, go buy a BRZ); like most modern Subies, the Forester feels a little disconnected from behind the wheel. That said, it feels a bit more dialed-in than the Outback Wilderness; driving them half a year and one whole continent apart makes pinning down the differences a bit tricky, but I’d say the Forester feels more composed on winding roads, with a bit less body roll and more accurate, more direct steering.
The naturally-aspirated boxer-four may be a long way off from the idealized flat-sixes found in Porsches, but the Forester never felt underpowered over the course of several hours of driving around Oregon, even when dashing around at altitudes of a mile up. Granted, it never came close to feeling overly powerful, either — I found the paddles handy to help hold revs mid-tach when climbing long hills — but for long highway slogs, daily drives and so forth, it’s plenty potent.

One of our favorite SUVs got a new look
We love the Hyundai Kona — a small, fun hatchback that happens to be a small crossover. It was NACTOY’s utility vehicle of the year for 2019, and is one of the best cars to buy in 2021. And hey, there’s even an EV version. For the 2022 model year, Hyundai is refreshing the Kona with a new look and a sporty new N-line trim.

Ford Bronco (2021)
Ford set itself a high bar with the new Bronco. The new SUV directly challenged the Jeep Wrangler, a popular American icon at the top of its performance game with a rich brand heritage dating back to World War II. It put on a full court press of branding, building up enormous hype. And the Bronco lived up to it. It’s a viable competitor for the Wrangler on and off-road — and it may be the more compelling option.

What’s the Grand Wagoneer like to drive?
Unexceptionally nice. Not that that’s an insult; rather, it means the engineers did a great job of making the experience unobtrusive. It’s a Jeep, and it’s a family-hauling luxury SUV; the driving experience is meant to be easy, not fun.
You could certainly get away thinking it was smaller than it is from behind the wheel; it never feels unwieldy or overly large. The 6.4-liter V8’s 471 horses and 455 lb-ft of torque give a decent amount of oomph, even though they have around 6,400 pounds of SUV to push around before you even put one soul aboard; it’s not going to win many drag races, but it should be quick enough to dash from 0 to 60 mph in under six seconds. (One small treat: the supple roar coming from the tailpipes when you hammer it.)
The standard air suspension helps this heavy beast ride smoothly; that said, there’s still a bit more noise and vibration coming through than I’d have expected. My guess: don’t blame the shocks and dampers, blame the 22-inch wheels, whose mighty diameter means the tires have to live with thinner sidewalls that transmit more of any impact into the cabin.
