A couple years back, on the heels of the pandemic-fueled rush to get outdoors, Airstream made a big splash with the announcement of its “most independent travel trailer” to date.

With the 23FB, you’ve still got room to sleep four, with a separate bedroom in the front that can be configured with one queen bed or two twin beds, depending how your marriage is going.

Dubbed the Trade Wind, this 25-footer boasted a three-inch suspension lift, Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse tires, a full kitchen and bathroom and sleeping space for five. It also packed an 810 Ah battery pack (four times the capacity of a typical Airstream trailer), 600W solar capacity (twice that of a standard trailer) and a powerful 3,000W inverter/charger combo.

Now this backcountry bandit is available in a slightly smaller and more bank account-friendly silhouette, thanks to Airstream’s introduction of the Trade Wind 23FB.

This scaled-back edition carries a lot of its predecessor’s best features, but at just under 24 feet long (23 feet, 11 inches), it’s a full 2 feet, 3 inches shorter. This shift in dimensions is notable for a number of reasons.

First off, it’s $10,000 cheaper ($120,900 rather than $130,900). It’s also 650 pounds lighter (5,650 pounds versus 6,300) and understandably more maneuverable, meaning it’ll go easier on both your tow rig and your sanity, not to mention that of anyone else on the road.

Of course, the smaller footprint means the interior had to shrink, but the 23FB is hardly lacking in amenities. You’ve still got room to sleep four, with a separate bedroom in the front that can be configured with one queen bed or two twin beds, depending how your marriage is going.

In the middle, you’ll find a small clothing closet, a convertible dinette offering 20 square feet of sleep space, and full kitchen with a fridge, sink, oven and three-burner stove, while the rear houses a full bathroom, including a shower.

This view of the interior from the rear displays a bevy of amenities — essentially everything but the bathroom.

The 23FB’s electrical capabilities are the same as the 25-foot version. Water-wise, you get a 37 gallon fresh water tank, a 37-gallon gray water tank and a 17-gallon waste water tank.

There are also 12 windows/skylights, manual patio awning 18,000 BTU furnace, 13,500 BTU A/C, JL Audio 4-speaker Bluetooth audio and 24-inch 12V DC smart TV.

We trust Cameron Diaz favors this configuration, assuming she and Benji don’t just sleep in separate trailers.

Options include a convection microwave, composting toilet, and rear and roadside window awnings.
