For a long time now, Airstream has been one of those brands that’s just kinda sneaky cool without really trying.

With what was just introduced at CES, however, we’re getting a peek at how cool Airstream can be when it actually tries.

From the eye-popping looks of the new Midnight Flamingo package — soon to be available as an optional upgrade to the classic Flying Cloud travel trailer — it’s working.

The dramatic lighting helps, but there’s no denying Midnight Flamingo’s long dark and handsome aesthetic.

So what stands out about this package? While I was disappointed to not see any hot pink accents — which would pair nicely with this sweet summer suit I actually own — there’s plenty of steak and a bit of sizzle for the two applicable floor plans, the 25FB and 27FB.

Adventure-ready elements

On the purely substantive side, the Midnight Flamingo package augments standard Flying Cloud elements such as QuietStream Climate Control and well-appointed living and sleeping spaces with some of the most desirable upgrades, which should help extend and optimize your most ambitious off-grid exploits.

These include a factory-installed 3-inch lift kit, providing additional ground clearance when tackling uneven off-road surfaces, and two bonus power sources: a 200Ah lithium battery bank and 300 watts of roof-mounted solar panels.

You can also connect to standard campsite shore power hookups to access a dual-ducted air conditioning system with heat pumps.

Also included is Airstream’s most popular optional feature — a rear hatch. Like a hotel room with a balcony, the rear hatch enables you to open up the back for al fresco meals with unobstructed views of stunning landscapes (depending where you park).

The hatch also makes it easier to load up sports gear such as bikes and surfboards.

Improved audio

Less “adventurous” but equally compelling is the premium Klipsch audio system, featuring a head unit that connects via Bluetooth to flood your little metal tube with immersive sound.

The source is four Klipsch brass cone speakers flanking the font and rear roof locker storage compartments.

These units represent a big step up from the standard speakers, making every track, podcast and movie that much crisper.

Blacked-out styling

While the Midnight Flamingo package is not nearly as blacked-out as some other treatments we’ve seen in the motoring world, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

After all, it would not be an Airstream without that largely aluminum exterior, and assuming you’re hanging out in this thing all day, a none more black aesthetic seems less than desirable.

Out on the road, the Midnight Flamingo’s blacked-out elements are striking without being obnoxious.

Instead, the package features a number of blackout elements, including a coating on the front stone guards, removable LP cover and bumper, plus a black trim and rub rail.

There are also blackout stylized aluminum wheels, a black cover on the rear bumper storage compartment and black protective coating on the bumper itself.

The Flying Cloud badge gets a black background with silver lettering, complemented by the silver flamingo icon near the main entry door. The awnings, one of which features an embroidered flamingo icon, are made of charcoal tweed Sunbrella fabric.

The interior, meanwhile, adopts a monochromatic palette with blackout accents that thankfully are not too over the top. These include woven charcoal fabric on the seating, matching charcoal bedspread fabric, black faucets and black light fixtures.

Perhaps most notable from the outside, however, is what’s behind the front and rear panoramic windows: blackout curtains that appear to block out everything.

That should make sleeping in easy after a long day of blowing everyone’s minds with how cool your Airstream is.

Availability and pricing

The Midnight Flamingo package will be available as an optional upgrade on the Flying Cloud 25FB and 27FB models early this year. Sans the package, the 25FB is priced at $110,500 and the 27FB starts at $119,000.
