Every year, a consortium of some of the greatest minds in the design world gather together to bestow one of the highest honors in the field of professional design: the Red Dot Award. This, however, isn’t like, say, The Oscars; it’s less a winner-take-all battle royale than a salute to great product, brand and communication design wherever it may be found. Cars, of course, depend on good design as much as anything, so the Red Dot jury makes sure to honor the best of them, as well.
For 2020, the jurors handed down a bounty of automotive awards across a wide variety of categories, but a few trends start to come through the static. Ferrari and Mazda are clearly favorites of the Red Dot gurus; each took home multiple wins for vehicles from their lineup. Electrification is clearly no obstacle to good design, given the entire EV subcategory that the jurors have set up. The design wizards of the world, like us car enthusiasts, clearly love their station wagons and hatchbacks. And Europeans, apparently, get all the cool-looking family cars.
