Rooftop tents, as we’ve gone on record many times saying, are an excellent way to upgrade your car camping game. But they do come with at least one compromise: once they’re up on top of your car, truck or SUV, you’re probably not gonna want to take them off there very often. That means your rooftop is no longer available for carrying anything else: no skis, no snowboards, no mountain bikes, no add-on cargo boxes. You’re basically limited to whatever you can stuff inside your ride.
That’s why Thule’s new Tepui Wedge Tent is so cool. By night, it’s a two-person tent; by day, it’s a cargo box.
Now, if that sounds familiar, that’s because this isn’t a brand-new idea for Thule; they pioneered it last year with the Hybox that we chose as one of the most notable products to go on sale in 2018. What makes the Hybox Wedge superior is that it opens at an angle from the edge, rather than popping up vertically, making it easier for one person to pop it open and load or unload it.
Otherwise, it’s similar to the regular Hybox in function, quickly transitioning from cargo box to camping tent by zipping the canopy into place. The interior is insulated, and features a foam mattress (with a cotton cover you can pop off for when you want to fill it with gear instead of yourself). And, of course, the removable canopy blends both weatherproof and breathable elements, so you get neither damp nor hot.
