We love boxy two-door off-roaders. That simple body style lies at the heart of the Jeep Wrangler, the Ford Bronco, the Land Rover Defender — and the Toyota Land Cruiser. (It’s also why automotive enthusiasts admire the new Suzuki Jimny, but that’s another story.)
Toyota has not offered a boxy two-door off-roader in the U.S. since the old FJ40 departed in 1983, but the company continued producing rugged 70 Series Land Cruiser two-doors for other markets. Mid-1990s versions are now available for import — and a prime example is this excellent 1994 FZJ70 LX being auctioned right now on Bring a Trailer.
This SUV isn’t your standard stock 70 series — the sort of rig that took a beating before being imported from Venezuela. It’s undergone a frame-off restoration, and been refinished in white with a black interior. It’s been upgraded to a newer 1FZ-FE 4.5-liter inline-six engine — used in the J100 Land Cruiser, before it moved to a V8 — and a five-speed manual.
You won’t have to spend thousands modding it out into the ideal off-roading rig, as previous owner already did that. This Land Cruiser has a six-inch lift kit, Old Man Emu shocks and King springs. Exterior additions include aftermarket bumpers, a roof rack, a Jerry can holder (essential for a fuel-guzzling Land Cruiser) and a snorkel. The SUV comes with two sets of wheels, and both 35 and 36-inch tires.
The auction for this 1994 70 Series Land Cruiser, as of this writing, is only up to $5,000. Expect that to escalate, though, with six days still left to go.
