Volkswagen already launched the new Mk8 version of the iconic Golf, which probably won’t be coming to the U.S. in that basic form. What definitely is coming is the hotter GTI version. Now, we know when we’ll meet it.
VW recently confirmed to the British website Autocar that they will launch the iconic hot hatch at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show in March. The hottest Golf R model will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
One could make a case for the Mk7 GTI being one of the best cars Volkswagen has ever produced, so expectations are high for the new one. Enthusiasts should expect the new GTI to be updated, but not overhauled too much. VW will stick with the 2.0-liter inline-four gas engine with its excellent six-speed manual and dual-clutch automatic transmission options. It will likely have the familiar GTI styling cues — red lipstick trim, optional plaid seats, etc. — the current model employs.
As with the Mk8 Golf, the major difference from the Mk7 GTI probably will be a digitally-oriented cockpit and connected software infrastructure, rather than much in the way of performance or aesthetic changes.
No dates were given on when the production GTI and Golf R will arrive in the U.S. Expect a delay of at least a few months between the product launch and when production vehicles arrive in European showrooms, then a further delay before the Mk8 GTI hits the U.S. A speculative guess for American arrival would probably be sometime in mid-2021.
