A half century’s wait

The venerable Jaguar E-Type will never be replaceable, thank goodness. That would be like trying to remake Michael Caine’s Get Carter with Stallone as the lead. See how that went? Yet count on Jaguar to create a modern roadster with the same spirit of beautiful open-top motoring with the brand spanking new 2013 Jaguar F-Type. The wait’s been long, but it appears to have been worth it.

Jaguar’s first true two-seater since the E-Type 50 years ago is evocative but not derivative. The all-aluminum F-Type comes in three tasty flavors, satisfying the cravings of the well-heeled and well-paid. Both the F-Type and F-Type S will sport a supercharged 3.0 liter V6 with 340 hp / 332 lb-ft and 380 hp / 339 lb-ft, respectively. The top of the line F-Type V8 S will deliver power via a beefy supercharged 5.0 liter V8 with 495 hp / 460 lb-ft., enough to rocket it to 60 in 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph. Leave the latté at home. The initial tranny offering will be the 8-speed ZF automatic with, prayerfully, a proper manual transmission later in an even faster R version. Deploy helmets. The F-Type goes on sale next year at a yet undisclosed price, but you can fantasize at your desk right now with the configurator on the Jaguar website.
