Just 10 years ago, Infiniti was viewed solely as the luxury brand of Nissan — separated only by upgraded leather upholstery, an analog clock and a slightly nicer logo. Fast forward to the Emerg-E concept (pronounced “emerge”). Similar to the Volt, the Emerg-E is an extended-range electric — with a radically different look. The 1.2-liter 3-cylinder mid-engine (a first for the brand) powers a generator that sends electricity to the two rear wheel motors, producing 402 horsepower and an axle-snapping 738 lb ft of torque. The beautiful concept rockets to 60 mph under 4 seconds, and can run for approximately 30 miles in pure electric mode. Fingers crossed for production.

The lines, the scoops, the overall wicked look: they’re all part of a new design step for the brand arguably living in Nissan’s shadow since its inception. The good news? Infiniti will come to market with a pure EV in the next two years. The bad news? It won’t be the Emerg-E. But with eye candy like this, along with the former Audi USA president leaving the German rings for the corner office of Infiniti’s new global headquarters in Hong Kong, it seems there might be a shift out of the shadow of big brother.
