We love the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen. It combines the Golf’s excellent driving dynamics with SUV-size cargo capacity. It’s cheap. It’s fuel-efficient. It offers a six-speed manual transmission. The Golf Sportwagen may be the best all-around affordable car. The problem is, Americans buy way more crossovers than wagons. So, VW is axing the Golf Sportwagen after 2019.
The Golf Sportwagen was already an outstanding deal at MSRP. But, with dealers clearing out inventory ahead of the model-year turnover, new 2019 versions are available at a crazy discount.
Some dealers appear to be offering $2,000 to $4,000 off MSRP for Golf Sportwagens. If you want a new 2019 base 1.4-liter S model with a manual transmission and front-wheel-drive, prices are dipping below $20,000. Per a quick search on CarGurus, a dealer in Kirkland, Washington has three Golf Sportwagens available for $18,110. Another dealer in Salem, Oregon has two Golf Sportwagens for $18,510. Meanwhile, Sportwagens with an automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive can be found for a hair above $20,000.
On top of the low sticker prices, 2019 Volkswagen models are still eligible for Volkswagen’s exceptional six-year 72,000-mile warranty, an offer expires at the end of the year.
If you’re looking for a practical family vehicle that’s still a driver’s car and budget-friendly, now is the time to grab one.
