Ever since Saab went defunct in the fallout from GM’s bankruptcy, the brand’s notoriously loyal owners have begrudgingly moved on to other vehicles. But those still wistful over the loss of their funky Swedish rides may have one last chance to score a brand new Saab — and it’s a very cool example.
Bilweb Auctions in Sweden has a rare 2014 Saab 9-3 Aero sedan up for auction. This version has a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four putting out 220 horsepower. It is painted “diamond silver” with two-tone leather seats.
And most excitingly of all: It’s brand new, with just 41 miles on the odometer — and it’s the last Saab vehicle to ever roll off a production line.
The car was built in Sweden, by the Chinese/Swedish company known as National Electric Vehicle Sweden using the Saab trademark. NEVS began producing a run of 9-3 sedans for the Swedish market in late 2013. Production was more limited than anticipated; the company shut things down due to a lack of funding in May 2014.
Bidding for the 9-3 Aero, as of this writing, has not yet started. It’s expected to fetch the equivalent of between $35,000–$45,000. Whether the NEVS-built Saab would meet the “substantially similar” or “show and display” requirements for import would be a fun conversation to have with U.S. Customs officials.
If you miss out on this auction, though, there are still plenty of chances to snag a Saab. You could still spend the money on a vintage Saab 96 or perhaps a 2000s era 9-5 Aero that is bound to be a future classic.
