Those seeking an affordable camper for smaller families can rejoice: Winnebago has unveiled the Solis, which is the Iowa-based company’s first pop-top camper van. The Solis offers serious capability and versatility for up to four people at a reasonable price point.
The Solis can sleep four comfortably in stock form — no need for a custom build-out. There’s a pop-up sleeping loft accessed by a removable ladder; meanwhile, the rear area can be equipped with a queen-size Murphy bed that can transition into a workspace. Or, buyers can opt for a convertible sleeper sofa with seatbelts, which would permit children (or small adults) to sleep while the van is in motion.
Winnebago designed the Solis for four-season functionality. Insulated walls protect the electricity and plumbing. The wet bathroom is heated, and can double as a drying room for wet gear.
For a camper van, the Solis is also relatively affordable. It uses a Ram Promaster chassis — is a cheaper starting point than the Winnebago Revel’s Mercedes Sprinter 4×4 setup, albeit at the cost of some capability. (Think less “epic overlanding treks” and more “saving on extravagant hotel prices at outdoor destinations.”) The base MSRP for a Solis is $100,667, which makes it the cheapest of Winnebago’s Class B campers and more than $60,000 less than the Revel.
And most importantly, unlike many great camper vans, you will be able to buy this one in North America. Per the Winnebago website, the Solis is “coming soon in 2020!”
