Ford is in the middle of climbing out of the car game, but the venerable American auto manufacturer still produces a wide range of SUVs. And that glut of crossovers and sport-utes means big savings right now: As part of Ford’s “Hurry Up and Save” summer sales event, certain trims of the EcoSport, Escape, Edge and Expedition are on sale at a 20 percent discount through Labor Day.
Ford calculates the 20 percent through a combination of cash incentives and national average dealer discounts. The SE trim of the EcoSport carries a $4,853 estimated discount, dropping the MSRP plus destination charge from $24,245 to $19,392. For the Ford Escape, the SE trim has a $5,522 estimated discount, bringing the price down to $22,073. The SEL trim of the Ford Edge has a $7,336 estimated discount, dipping the price under $30,000 to $29,339. The XLT trim of the Ford Expedition gets a $12,422 estimated discount, driving the cost down to $49,698.
Why such great deals? Clearing out 2019 inventory ahead of the 2020 model year is part of this –- the deals are valid only on vehicles that have been on the lot for 61 days or more. But it may be worth noting media cover raw sales figures much more than transaction prices. The Q2 narrative was all about Ford sales being down four percent overall; even a slim sales uptick could make a major difference this quarter.
A sales boost could reinforce the success of the EcoSport (up 46 percent year-over-year in 2019) and the Expedition (up 56 percent). It could also bring the Escape and Edge near or above their 2018 sales levels. Ford could have five of its six SUVs with improved year over year sales — and the sixth, the Explorer, has just picked up a reboot for 2020. Add that to a bunch of third-quartier stories about things looking up at Ford (what with two new Broncos, the new F150, and an electric Mustang-inspired sports crossover on the way), and you’ve got a narrative that plays great on Wall Street.
