It’s hard to find a sweeter ride than a custom Land Rover Defender rebuild. But, those can run you well past $100,000, and there will be a number of them rumbling around the Hamptons this summer. If you want a rugged off-roader with Euro-style military heritage (and don’t want to surrender a small fortune), check out this 1988 Mercedes-Benz 240GD Wolf on Bring a Trailer.
The 240GD Wolf is a variant of the first-generation G-Wagen. This Wolf is a two-door, short-wheelbase soft top. The “240GD” designation means it has Mercedes’ 2.4-liter inline-four diesel engine. This one comes with a four-speed manual gearbox and front and rear locking differentials.
The owner of this Wolf imported it from Denmark, where it began life in Danish military service. Accompanying photos confirm it had an 11-month, body-off refurbishment, which included the blue paint job, a custom interior and an upgraded stereo system. Added components include a custom soft top, a snorkel and a 12,000-pound winch.
Sure, you could buy a similar vintage Jeep Wrangler. But, this Wolf is rarer, more interesting and, as of this writing, still available for less than $20,000.
