Ford’s beastly 760 hp Shelby GT 500 Mustang is more than just a big engine.

When Ford broke out the VR headsets to introduce the new Mustang Shelby GT500 at NAIAS earlier this year, the company promised it would be the most powerful street-legal Mustang released from the factory and that it would “embarrass supercars at a Ford price.” We’ve yet to receive a detailed spec sheet but we finally have some insight into the Shelby’s gallop. According to a recent press release, the car will boast a 0-100-0 mph time of 10.6 seconds.

The stat calculates the time it would take the car to accelerate from 0-100 mph then come to a complete stop. It’s not a standard metric and, thus, it’s harder to contextualize — but MotorTrend tabulates it for some vehicles. On their list (from 2017) the Shelby GT500’s 10.6 seconds would slot between the Acura NSX (10.9) and the Tesla Model S P100D (10.2). Only two cars on the list had broken 10.0 seconds, the McLaren 675LT and the Porsche 911 Turbo S.

However rarified the company, Ford is highlighting two things with the 0-100-0 mph stat: that the Shelby GT500 accelerates quickly thanks to the Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (upshifts as quick as 80 milliseconds per Ford) and just how rapidly the Shelby GT500 with its 16.5-inch rotors can stop.

We’re still waiting for the official 0-60 mph time (estimated to be in the 3.5-second range) and standard acceleration times, but the 0-100-0 mph time gets us one step closer to knowing how the Shelby GT500 will compare with more powerful editions of the new 2020 Corvette, Chevrolet’s take on an affordable supercar.
