If Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn was ever searching for the perfect summer ride, it would most certainly be the BMW i8 Concept Spyder, about to debut in New York. Based on the ultra-futuristic BMW i8, the Concept Spyder is driven by the same 131 horsepower electric motor, providing a whole 19 miles of electrical driving pleasure (at a whopping 94 mpg), coupled with a 223 horsepower turbo three-cylinder engine and the latest battery technology, wrapped in what is called BMW eDrive. The car is no slouch, with 354 hp, enabling a zero-to-sixty time of 5 seconds, plus a 50/50 front to rear weight distribution, resulting in excellent handling that BMW is known for. eDrive also enables both drive systems to power front, rear or all four wheels, depending on driving conditions.
The i8 Concept Spyder will sport the same cutting-edge technology as the i8 coupe and should include laser headlights, those crazy winged doors, and all the latest technology from the German automaker. We hope to see this car follow on the heels of the 2+2 coupe, emerging in 2014, and not because it’s the greatest looking concept we’ve seen. It, however, does manage to push the automotive envelope in some seriously radical ways.
