The Toyota 86—formerly known as the Scion FR-S to those of us here in the United States—is exactly the sort of car automotive enthusiasts always clamor for: lightweight, delightfully well-balanced, and cheap. Sadly, while drivers love the idea of it, buyers haven’t quite shown up in droves; last year, less than 4,200 copies sold in the US last year.
So to spice things up a little, Toyota is throwing a new special edition version of its compact sports car into the mix. Meet the 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition, going on sale this fall.
The name comes from the Hakone Turnpike, a heavenly stretch of toll road south of Tokyo that’s been compared to the Nurburgring Nordschleife, climbing roughly eight and a half miles from around sea level to a mountain peak. Telling the 86 Hakone apart from other Toyobarus shouldn’t be hard; it boasts an eye-catching combination of specially-made dark green paint, a black spoiler, and bronze-colored 17-inch wheels. Tan leather and black Alcantara dominates the interior, with matching tan accents tastefully scattered about, including an “86” logo embroidered right onto the passenger’s side dashboard.
If you were hoping this special edition Toyota 86 would arrive making more power…well, that’s still something you’ll need to venture into the aftermarket to find. The 2.0-liter boxer-four is unchanged, making 205 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque when tied to the six-speed manual (or a few less when connected to the six-speed slushbox). You will, however, receive not one but two tan leather covers for your 86’s keys when you purchase the 86 Hakone. So there’s that.
