Nearing 60 years of constant production, the Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic vehicles ever to exist. The original models, first built in the mid-Sixties, are arguably the most beautiful and desirable of all, thanks to groundbreaking fastback bodywork, lithe proportions, a proper muscle-car formula – V8 in front, driven wheels in the rear – and, of course, those racing stripes.
The beauty of the Mustang continues to be how easily enthusiast owners can modify their cars. Superchargers, special exhaust, spoilers, etc. – the list is magnificently long. It’s no small thing to own a real Sixties-era Mustang, let alone pour money into making it a rolling work of performance art. LEGO, the enthusiast’s favorite building block, has introduced a customizable Mustang based on those first fastbacks, and it’s available for purchase this Friday, March 1.
The set is part of the LEGO Creator Expert series, meaning it’s a more complex and detailed model than most sets. The new Mustang is in good company in the Creator Expert land: an Aston Martin DB5 and Mini Cooper of similar vintage are featured in the collection alongside a handful of other notable vehicles.
This particular 1,471-piece set, which will sell for $150, is 13-inches long and features a detailed V8 engine under the hood, to which you can add a massive supercharger; out back, a removable spoiler adds some visual weight if not functional downforce; the rear suspension can be raised and lowered to vary the car’s stance.
Basically, this is a mechanically-inclined hot rod fanatic’s dream toy. We’re looking forward to getting our hands on a set so we can share more down the line.
