For a few years now, the rally-inspired, “Safari” style 911 has become the hot trend in the modified Porsche world, thanks much in part to the excellent work of Porsche nut Leh Keen. But before Keen started his off-road Porsche projects in 2013, there was this very 911 you see here built by GSR Autosport. Based on a 1984 911, the car was built in 2012 as part of eBay’s Built on eBay challenge for SEMA, which tasked four with builders creating a unique car for under $50,000 by buying a car and parts on the online auction platform.
The car was sold at auction to its current owner, apparently for just $33,700 (which is insane.) Since then, he’s put just about 1,000 miles on and even had more work done to it, including a total engine rebuild. But all of the rally-ready parts are still there: a roll cage, a stripped-down interior, Recaro seats, Bilstein shocks, a raised suspension, Enkei rally wheels, gravel tires and the essential pod of rally lights. In short, it looks like it’d be fun as hell to fling down a gravel road or take off sweet jumps. Now imagine that. That could be you.
Better yet, this could be you after spending not a ton of money, at least as far as air-cooled 911s, especially Safari style 911s, are concerned. A Keen Porsche will set you back somewhere in the area of $100,000, and while there’s a lot of work that goes into the car to justify that price, it’s still, well, a lot. As of writing, this 911 sits at $20,000 with a few days left so it’s hard to project exactly where it ends up, but there’s a good chance it won’t hit six figures.
