To help ring in Land Rover’s 70th anniversary, the skilled team at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Coventry, England will restore one of the original three Land Rover pre-production prototypes that helped launch the brand in 1948. It’s an incredibly momentous occasion — and it’s happening only by a stroke of luck.
This Series I prototype was last seen on the road in the 1960s; after that, it apparently spent 20 years in the middle of a field somewhere in the Welsh countryside. After being found and purchased, the buyer intended to turn it into a restoration project. Instead, it became glorified garden furniture on a property in Solihull, England — coincidently, just down the road from where it was first built. Which is where the JLR team found it. The restoration by Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works will take the rest of 2018 to complete, but as far as septuagenarian birthday presents go, an original Land Rover prototype has to be a list-topper.
