Editor’s Note: We love scouring the internet for reasons to spend money we don’t have on cars we daydream about owning, and these are our picks this week. All prices listed are bid amounts at the time of publishing.
Now that it’s all but certain Subaru will be giving us a glimpse at the new WRX next month at the Tokyo Auto Show, a particular nostalgia has bubbled up about the older WRXs here at the Gear Patrol office. It’s hard not to love the WRX. Even the base model is wildly fantastic car and has proven itself time and time again that it’s a competent machine on both smooth, civilized roads and in the gravel and snow. So whether you’re looking for a standard WRX or the range-topping STI, it’s doubtful you’ll be disappointed with these four.
2002 Subaru Impreza WRX Sport

What we like: This is easily the most humble pick on the list. It’s certainly the oldest and has the highest mileage, which probably makes it a prime candidate to be your designated winter beater.
