Today, BMW finally showed the world the next generation M5 — no camouflage, no spy shots, this is it — and it looks like BMW has found its footing again.
The 2017 M2 is one of the best cars BMW has put together in recent memory and it’s the exactly the kind car BMW should be making. It’s a car that knows precisely what it is and isn’t ashamed of it. And it looks like BMW has molded the latest-generation super sedan in the same spirit as the focused and unfiltered M2.
For all intents and purposes, the M2 is a perfectly balanced two-door performance car with a seriously unhinged side to it. It’s a combination that makes for one of those rare cars that are actually at home on both the track and the street, with close to no compromise — an echo of the early-’00s BMW M cars. The newest M5, seen above, looks to do the same. The M5’s 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque comes from a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, all put to the ground via BMW’s all-new M xDrive, which can be set in either AWD or RWD with varying levels of traction control. It sounds like BMW has built a ballistic sedan in waiting — all it needs is your permission with a push of a button or two (and maybe a sequence of switches). Of course, all this won’t be confirmed until the physical road test, but Road and Track can confirm from their test of the prototype, earlier this year, that the “M5 is still true to what makes BMW sport sedans great.”
The 2018 BMW M5 goes on sale late this year with a price tag around $140,000.
