Mercedes-Benz continued its run of incredible concept cars with the unveiling of Vision 6 Cabriolet at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this past weekend. It follows the design cues of the Vision 6 Coupe with ultra-grandiose lines and a silhouette closer to a Riva Aquarama than any other car on the road.
Given that it’s almost 20 feet long, it’s not hard to equate the new concept to sea-faring vessel, either; but add to that the open-pore wood floors inlaid with aluminum strips, Chesterfield furniture–inspired upholstery and a 750 horsepower all-electric engine, and you’ll see that the Vision 6 Cabriolet brings new meaning to the term “land yacht.”
As with most concept cars, the Vision 6 concept — both the gullwing-adorned Coupe and the Cabriolet — will never see production. But, the true purpose of these cars is to showcase the next generation of styling Mercedes has planned for the cars that will make it to production. Smooth, sweeping, uninterrupted lines are the most prevalent characteristic on the Vision 6 duo, which Mercedes has already started to introduce by way of the new E-Class. Simple, backlit interiors that focus on being all-encompassing rather than cluttered and overwhelming, though exaggerated in the Vision 6, can also be seen taking shape in Mercedes’s current line already.
It’s a welcome reprieve in an industry that seems to be obsessed with hard lines and edges all for the sake of aerodynamics. What the world really needs is for Mercedes to bring the Vision 6 to life, regardless of whether only two percent of the population would be able to afford it.
