Remember when the Dodge SRT Hellcat’s 707 horsepower seemed insane? Well, those days are over. The 700 horsepower neighborhood has quickly become familiar territory for high-end sports cars and supercars alike. And, just this past weekend, Porsche brought back the GT2 RS nameplate with an announcement at E3, accompanying the debut of the Forza Motorsport 7 trailer and the next-generation Xbox One X. Not at any big car show like Geneva or Detroit — at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. What’s more, according to (slightly conflicting) reports from Jalopnik and Autoweek, the new top-flight 911 will have somewhere between 640 and 700 horsepower.
Given that McLaren has the 710 horsepower 720S and Ferrari’s 488 GTB successor is expected to have a similar output, the GT2 RS was a smart move by Porsche to keep the 911 name relevant in that circle. Specifics on the GT2 RS are scarce at the moment, but expect the finer details to trickle in the closer we get to the release of Forza Motorsport 7 in early October, where the most powerful 911 will be featured and its stats will be on full display. October can’t come soon enough.
