Sunday’s big race at the Indy 500 is only part of the allure of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Over 350,000 spectators made their way to Indianapolis Motor Speedway this past weekend for much more than that: there’s also live concerts, unprecedented driver access with autograph sessions and pit-lane walks, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame and Museum, and of course, the infamous Snake Pit, filled with overzealous and incredibly dedicated, drunken race fans from sun up to sun down, all weekend (which makes for some world-class people-watching).
But one of the best attractions, barring the actual race (and the Snake Pit), is the vintage Gasoline Alley set up in the Speedway parking lot. The actual Gasoline Alley is where all the Indy Cars are kept and worked on throughout the month of May — the pit garages just off the main straight. In the vintage section, you’ll see the old cars, one from nearly every generation, either being worked on — engine covers off and exposing all the incredibly intricate old engineering — or sitting fully put together. It’s one of the better Sunday morning meetups you can find.
