Today, Porsche built the millionth 911, and in a fitting tribute, it’s styled to look like the very first 911, ever. The Porsche 911 Carrera S, number 1,000,000, is painted in a deep and beautiful Irish Green, fitted with houndstooth pattern bucket seats, a wooden steering wheel, and, most importantly, a manual gearbox with a wood-capped shifter. Which, ironically, and in some weird twist, makes it looks like Porsche’s attempt at a Singer Designed 911. That doesn’t mean it’s not a stunningly beautiful car, though.
Porsche created an icon in 1963 and, over the past 54 years, developed it into an unconventional yet legendary sports car. The best minds in the business scoffed at Ferdinand Porsche when he bolted the engine in behind the rear wheels, effectively putting the carriage in front of the horse. And some might say the 911 has barely changed since — but it may be the best example yet of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The Porsche 911 is one of the most successful cars on the road and track, where handling and performance are concerned — numbers don’t lie. So here’s to 1 million 911s and (at least) 1 million more.
