As the outdoors warm, they beg to be explored: start with the right vehicle.

Editor’s Note: We love scouring the internet for reasons to spend money we don’t have on cars we daydream about owning, and these are our picks this week. All prices listed are bid amounts at the time of publishing.

The weather has finally broken, blue skies and open terrain beckon overlanders everywhere. That’s not to say a good mud chucking Defender can’t handle a little rain and a few clouds (it was built in England, after all), but backwoods trails and mountain passes are just better with the windows down. It’s time to pick up a rugged off-roader, load it up with gear, family and friends and set out on an adventure into the wilderness.

1971 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

What we like: Out on the trail, less is definitely more. The less that can break and get covered in dirt, the better. And this ’71 FJ40 is as minimalist as it gets, but it should be said that the rubber coating the last owner gave the interior is actually a welcome add-on — all it takes to clean is a good hose-down.
From the seller: Original steel doors have been made into half doors and the interior is lined with rubberized bed-liner. The truck includes only the bikini top shown in the photos and is a reliable driver.

1993 Land Rover Defender 110 NAS

What we like: One of 500 110 NASs sold in the U.S., and this one is being sold by the original owner — a unicorn by Defender standards. Not to mention it comes equipped with a factory external cage, roof rack and front brush bar. That Alpine White paint job is just begging for mud-splattered accents.
From the seller: The truck was originally sold by the newly formed Land Rover North America to promote the launch of the upcoming Defender 90 and Discovery. This example is now being offered with a clear Texas title in the seller’s name.

Mileage: 81,850
Location: Mckinney, Texas

1971 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45

What we like: The frame-off restoration basically means you’re getting a brand-new FJ45. It’s a workhorse with a new lease on life.
From the seller: This 1971 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45 long bed pickup has recently benefited from a complete frame-off restoration that utilized new Toyota parts wherever possible. The seller is a collector and Toyota Land Cruiser enthusiast that purchased the truck last year from the original owner, who had it stored in a hillside barn on a coffee plantation in Costa Rica.

Mileage: 333 (restored)
Location: Katy, Texas

1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

What we like: We’ll call this the overlander-lite of the group. The Wagoneer wasn’t an out-and-out overlander, but if you showed it an easy-going trail or two it wouldn’t disappoint. And the white-on-walnut exterior with matching long-pile carpeting had to shared.
From the seller: This 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is a white-over-chestnut driver with 183,000 miles on its 360ci V8 and three-speed automatic transmission. In production for over 20 years by 1984, the full-sized Jeep was renamed and given a new emphasis on luxury appointments as the only model offered that year.

Mileage: 183,000
Location: Rapid City, South Dakota

2002 Mercedes-Benz G500

What we like: Granted, this G500 is the newest truck in the roundup — and has a decent amount of miles on it — but it’s been looked after extensively and kept in beautiful condition.
From the seller: It has reportedly seen regular maintenance from new, while extensive servicing within the past two years included new valve cover gaskets, a MAF sensor, crankshaft position sensor, transfer case control unit and motor, power steering pump. Mechanically unmodified throughout, all factory paint and body panels are said to be present.

Location: Krum, Texas

1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

What we like: You could call this FJ a resto-mod, but where the usual upgrades would make this thing look like a hotrod, the previous owners have kept the new parts subtle and classy.
From the seller: This 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 was refurbished by the seller and the previous owner. Work included disassembling a partially assembled truck, sandblasting all the metal parts, priming and painting, reassembling with new gaskets and seals, installing new seat covers and floor mats from Cruiser Corp, new parking lights, rear light lenses, and a headliner.

Mileage: restored
Location: Bremen, Maine

1987 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60

overlanders-gear-patrol-fj60

What we like: The FJ60 is the generation of Land Cruisers right before Toyota started to go off the deep end with luxurious extras. This one in particular is documented as having been expertly maintained and is mechanically stock — a steal.
From the seller: This 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 is believed to have spent the majority of its life in California and was moved to Minnesota after it was acquired by the selling dealer three years. The previous owner had work performed by Carlson Toyota, including a new clutch slave/master. It was also serviced at Land Cruiser specialists TLC with brake and axle work.
