If you thought the luxury of having four turbochargers on your engine was reserved for Bugatti Chiron owners — think again. BMW just announced the M550d xDrive which comes with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine that chugs out 400 horsepower and tire-shredding 560 lb-ft of torque (that’s 81 more than its standard gas 4.4-liter V8 brother) available in either a sedan or wagon trim.
And you read that right — it’s a diesel, so that means you’ll be getting around 40mpg too, which is actually pretty commendable for a Bimmer with that many M-badges and a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds. You also get M sports suspension, Integral Active Steering and an M aerodynamics package. Not to mention the wagon trim gets all that and the added practicality. For how much, exactly, is still up in the air. The standard M550i xDrive has a price tag of $72,100, so it’s safe to assume the M550d will come in just below that — if it comes to the U.S. at all.
That’s the kicker. We didn’t get the last-generation M550d at all, but there’s reason to be cautiously optimistic. Wagons seem to be rebuilding a presence on the American market (they’re basically better-looking and more practical crossovers, right?) via Volvo, Audi and most recently Jaguar, and BMW would be smart to get in on the ground floor. Please, BMW, give us this wagon; we want it.
