If you’ve been paying attention to the past couple of auto shows, you’ll know Mercedes has been rolling out concept car after concept car. And while they all look decidedly Mercedes, they also showcase the direction the new German brand wants to head in, design-wise.
The A-Class Sedan Concept, unveiled today at the Shanghai Auto Show, is the latest addition to the group, and, according to Gorden Wagener, chief design officer Daimler A.G., the clearest look at the next generation of Mercedes-Benz cars. “Our Concept A Sedan shows that the time of creases is over. With its perfect proportions and a sensual treatment of surfaces with reduced lines, it is the next milestone of ‘Sensual Purity,’ and has the potential to introduce a new design era.”
From the way Mercedes describes it, the A-Class Sedan Concept appears to be nearly production-ready and would likely replace the CLA if it does go to production (spoiler: it probably will). Which is a very good thing, since the CLA’s price tag is a touch over $30,000 and the A-Class (the car that Europe gets but the US doesn’t) costs around $26,000; so it’s safe to assume the new compact sedan would sit somewhere in that range. But to get these incredibly good looks — the bleeding edge of Mercedes design — in this price bracket, is a damn bargain. And if Mercedes’s new smoother, cleaner, crease-less design pushes other car makers to up their game, we’re in for an era where the roads will be packed with desperately pretty cars. Yes, please.
