It’s a little-known fact that before Germany’s official national color was bare silver (hence the Silver Arrows), it was white. Italy has Rosso Corsa red (made famous by Ferrari), Britain has British Racing Green (made most famous by Colin Chapman and Lotus F1). Germany has silver because in 1934, Mercedes engineers stripped the white, lead-based paint to save weight on their Mercedes-Benz W25 grand Prix car.
But even today, German cars, and particularly Porsches, look undeniably attractive with an alpine-white paint job. Is it inherited? Natural? Maybe just a coincidence? Porsche calls it Grand Prix White for a reason, and no one would blame you for being swayed toward that end of the color spectrum. Make your shopping easier with these five vintage Porsches that call back to their pre–Silver Arrow Era roots.
