Thule’s New Tepui Rooftop Tent Could Be an Overlanding Game-Changer

Thule’s new Tepui Foothill tent will offer the convenience of a rooftop tent and room to store your gear.

Rooftop tents provide a fantastic gateway to the outdoors, by quickly (and relatively affordably) turning your car into a camper. And, hey, who likes sleeping on the ground that much anyway?

The one drawback to rooftop tents is they take up a large percentage of your roof, which could be devoted to gear storage. Thule has just unveiled a solution to that problem, however, with their new, compact Tepui Foothill roof tent.

The Tepui Foothill is a well-appointed rooftop tent that sleeps two adults, but it also leaves significant rack space for a bike, a surfboard, a kayak or other gear items you might need for your car camping experience by folding into a 24-inch width — about half the typical width of a rooftop tent. It’s also low-profile, sitting just 9.5 inches above the roof rack, which, depending on your vehicle, should reduce the chances of a parking garage disaster. That tidy storage shape also means the Tepui Foothill is easy to store when it’s not in use.

You’re not sacrificing much to get that added space. The Tepui Foothill features a wide entry, a panoramic rear window and dual skylights. The telescopic internal frame poles permit an easy, one-person setup. It comes with a comfortable, high-density foam mattress, and you can accessorize it with other Thule accessories.

The Tepui Foothill goes on sale in February 2021. The price tag, $1,699.95, is relatively cheap for a rooftop tent. But if you need to get away sooner than that (we can’t blame you), you can buy the Thule Tepui Low Pro-2 tent right now; it has a similar low-profile design, though it will commandeer most of the space on your roof rack.
