By now, you’re probably pretty familiar with the new Land Rover Defender. After all, we’ve certainly been talking about it for quite a while; we’ve covered its reveal, seen it at auto shows and driven it both on-road and off. We’ve spent time in the company of several versions — Defender 110s and Defender 90s, simple ones and gussied-up versions, clean unadorned ones and ones bedecked in accessories — and as a result, we can say fairly definitively that the newest Land Rover most certainly looks better with a roof rack.
Of course, Land Rover is happy to sell you one of its own if you’d so desire as part of the Explorer Pack of accessories. But if you don’t really feel the need for the rest of that $4,800 pack’s accoutrements — a snorkel, mudflaps, and an exterior gear box among them — you could always go for Front Runner Outfitters’s Defender-specific roof rack, instead.
Front Runner, in case you’ve forgotten, is one of the most trustworthy names in off-road and overlanding accessories, whipping up quality parts that make carrying gear out into parts unknown (or at least, less well-known than the paved roads) a snap. Considering that, a Defender roof rack must have seemed like a layup for the South Africa-based company.
As you’d expect, not only does it play nicely with dozens of Front Runner accessories — jerry can holders, kayak mounts, ski/snowboard carriers, etc. — but its sturdy aluminum design has been torture-tested over hundreds of thousands of miles. The slats can even be adjusted to let light flow through the moonroof when you don’t need to lug objects around on top of your Landie.
The rack comes in two versions — one made to work with the Land Rover-spec roof rails, and a kit that mounts to two Front Runner rails instead. Both of them are available now…and, might we say, would make a great holiday gift for the new Defender owner in your life.
