Jeep is reviving the Grand Wagoneer, which the brand will unveil in all its glory next week. Like the new Land Rover Defender, you can expect it to be an impressive — and expensive — vehicle. But if we’re honest, it probably will not be quite as chic as rolling up in a fine fettle version of the original.
Speaking of that original Grand Wagoneer: just about the lowest-mileage version you’ll ever find for sale just showed up for auction on Bring a Trailer.
It’s a metallic blue 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with the original 5.9-liter V8 that put out 144 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque when new and a three-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Wagoneer had one owner who kept it in New York and Chicago from 1988 through 2017 before being given away to an assistant. It only has about 12,000 miles on its six-digit odometer.

Bring a TrailerAs one would anticipate with a 32-year-old unrestored SUV, things are not entirely perfect. The seller notes some paint bubbling. You may want to see some more undercarriage shots before pulling the trigger. And there is a discrepancy with the paperwork, though that appears to be a clerical error. Still, if you’re looking for an original Grand Wagoneer, it will be almost impossible to find one in this kind of close-to-new condition.
Grand Wagoneers tend to be relatively affordable, by vintage off-roader standards, but don’t expect this example to go cheaply. The record for a stock engine model on BAT is one that sold in July for $58,000 with only 37,000 miles. The bidding is already up to $30,000 on this one with six days left on the auction. That record should be well within reach.
