We’re still a few years away from getting an all-new Tacoma pickup, which may look a lot like the new Hilux. But Toyota does have some cool changes in store for the 2021 model year. Toyota is sticking with the dated six-speed automatic transmission, sadly — but buyers will get two new special edition trims to pick from.

First off, the 2021 Tacoma will offer a Trail Special Edition built off the SR5 model. The special edition will offer appearance features such as black exterior badging, black seating with tan stitching, dark gray 16-inch TRD Off-Road wheels and the Limited trim’s grille. It also brings some helpful features for, as the name would suggest, hitting the trail — like a 120-volt power outlet in the bed and lockable bed storage with a drain plug that can function as a cooler. The Trail Special Edition will start at $37,080 for the 4×4 version.

Another new trim will be the 2021 Tacoma Nightshade Edition. This edition will be a more upscale offering based on the Limited trim…and, as you’ve probably guessed, it’s a black detailing package. It will come with dark smoke 18-inch alloy wheels, black exhaust tip and fog light bezels and a darkened chrome grille insert. You can opt for Midnight Black Metallic for the full Darth Vader-spec look, opt for Magnetic Gray Metallic or, for a little extra money, Windchill Pearl. The Nightshade Edition will start at $42,980 for the 4×4 version.
Both trims should be popular. The Trail Special Edition ties together some cool upgrades for a reasonable price, and buying a “special edition” is more fun for buyers than an SR5. And while blacked-out detailing may be ubiquitous these days, it looks far cooler on pickups than, say, a Fiat 500L.
