Last week, Land Rover announced the arrival of a new addition to the Range Rover family, the Velar, with just a single, appetite-whetting image of the new mid-sized luxury SUV’s panoramic glass roof and the promise of more details to come March 1. That’s today.

Land Rover made it abundantly clear that the Velar would be slot into the gap between the Range Rover Sport and Evoque. However, that’s a space where the F-Pace SUV, from sister company Jaguar, resides. Not only will they share the same marketplace, but the two SUVs will also have similar engine choices: an 180 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel, a 247 horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, and the same 380 horsepower 3.0-liter supercharged V6 from the F-Type — a.k.a., the engine you want. Land Rover’s whole host of AWD and traction management systems are available for every model.

If the idea of having one of the first 500 Velar First Edition Models is of any interest (which only come with the V6), Land Rover sweetens the deal with a leather interior, copper weave carbon fiber trim, perforated Windsor leather seats, a 1,600-watt Meridian Signature Sound System and 22-inch diamond-brushed split-spoke wheels.

While the closely related Jaguar goes for $41,990 , the most affordable Velar will be available later this year at $49,990. It’ll be interesting to get the F-Pace next to the Velar to see wich one you’d rather give JLR money for — the corner carving F-Pace or the off-road savvy Velar — sport or luxury.
