Toyota Made Some Changes to Its Best Off-Road SUVs for 2021

Toyota has announced a few changes to the Land Cruiser, 4Runner and Tundra pickup for the 2021 model year. The massive shifts to Toyota’s lineup may be a few years away, but there are still some noteworthy tweaks (and new editions) to be aware of if you’re in the market for a dependable off-road Toyota.

Land Cruiser

We enjoyed the somewhat pared-down Land Cruiser Heritage Edition (which costs a very much not-paired-down $87,845). That variant is going to stick around for the 2021 model year. Unlike the 2020 version, you will be able to add a third-row seat (pricing TBD).

Last year’s version only came in black or white. The 2021 Heritage Edition, meanwhile, expands the color palette to silver and gray.

4Runner

The 4Runner’s top-tier TRD Pro trim ($50,470 MSRP) gets a new Lunar Rock color option to replace Army Green. The TRD Pro also gets new black TRD alloy wheels, Nitto Grappler Tires and re-tuned 2.5-inch Fox Shocks.

Toyota is also giving the 4Runner a new trim, the Trail Special Edition (starting at $40,190). It resembles last year’s Venture Special Edition, but is cheaper, and based on the SR5 trim. It has a Yakima LoadWarrior rooftop cargo basket as well as black badging and detailing.

It also comes with a custom 40-quart cooler in either “cement” or color-matched to the car (if you get the Army Green version). The air-tight cooler can keep ice frozen for up to seven days, and serve as either a seat or table. It also has convenient built-in bottle openers.

Tundra

The TRD Pro trim ($53,050) for the Tundra makes a similar switch as the 4Runner, with Lunar Rock replacing Army Green in the color options. The Tundra also gets a Trail Special Edition ($45,020) based on the SR5 with black detailing, special edition wheels and the 1794 Edition’s chrome grille.

There’s no Yakima rack, though the bed storage can still serve as an insulated cooler. The Tundra also adds a Darth Vader-spec Nightshade Edition ($46,440) with black-on-black detailing.
