Here’s Our Best Look at the Hummer EV, Which Will Be Here Very Soon

GMC’s new electric Hummer with 400 miles of range and 1,000 horsepower is coming soon. A new teaser video offers a great preview of it.

During this year’s Super Bowl, GMC came clean with a big announcement: it declared that it will be building an electric Hummer, one that will offer as much as 1,000 horsepower and a 400-mile range, among other cool features.

We were supposed to meet the new electric truck in May; then GM delayed the launch, for obvious reasons. Now, though, the company has just provided our best look yet at the new pickup and the future SUV version — as well as additional details about its cool features and when it will arrive in showrooms.

Judging from the video, both forms of the Hummer EV will be boxy. The SUV version will look a bit more like the civilian Hummer from the 2000s. It seems like both vehicles will have tapered front and rear ends, presumably to improve off-roading approach and departure angles. GMC also notes the Hummer will have “Adrenaline” and “Crab” modes, which we’re guessing are some sort of sport and off-road crawling modes (maybe it can drive sideways?).

GMC also gave us a firmer timeline for when the trucks will debut: this fall. (You’ll also be able to put a deposit down then, much like with the new Bronco.) Production will begin in fall 2021.

While the idea of resuscitating the famous gas-guzzler as an electric vehicle may seem odd at first blush, GM leading the way into its electric future with a Hummer EV makes a sort of sense, when you stop to think about it. While giant trucks and SUVs are gas-guzzling as internal combustion vehicles, it’s easier to dump a lot of battery packs in a big heavy truck than it is to shoehorn them into a compact or sports car. Pairing it with an established brand like Hummer (as Ford did with the Mustang Mach-E) makes going electric a little less scary. Plus, the Hummer EV sounds supremely capable, and we’re very much looking forward to driving one.

What we’re not sure about is who will buy the Hummer EV. The people who purchase electric vehicles and the people still nursing their Hummers along after 10-plus years tend to reside at opposite ends of the automotive spectrum. Off-roaders will have (presumably) cheaper options, with the Jeep Wrangler and the new Ford Bronco. And the burly EV segment is about to get crazy-crowded, with Ford, Tesla, Rivian, and Bollinger launching electric pickups. Guess we’ll learn more come fall 2020.
