Hitting the road in an RV sounds like the optimal way to travel right now — especially if you can finagle a stable Internet connection while on the road so you can still work from “home.” One big issue with that scenario, though: finding the recreational vehicle itself.
After all, motorhomes, camper vans and camping trailers can be crazy expensive. They’re just about the most inconvenient items one can own when you’re not using them. And even if you have the finances and the space to accommodate one, that swanky, Instagram-caliber vacation rig will take months to build.
Enter RVshare, a business that’s effectively the AirBnb of recreational vehicles. RVshare is a peer-to-peer rental company that allows users to rent and rent out their vehicles; as such, they offer a wide range of inventory, from spartan pop-top campers to full-on luxury apartment on wheels. (And yes, dog lovers, you can even search out pet-friendly options.) You can also get your trailer or camper delivered to your door, saving you from awkwardly banging on a stranger’s door and asking to drive the RV off their lawn.
You might imagine, this would be the point where I inform you how staggering unaffordable this great camping vehicle-related thing is. But RVshare prices are quite reasonable — especially compared to the alternative flight-plus-hotel-plus-rental-car option that seemed unpleasant even before the rise of COVID-19.
For example: you could rent this brand-new Winnebago Micro-Mini trailer that sleeps four outside Denver for $160 per night. Or you could park on the Pacific Coast Highway with this Airstream International Signature that sleeps six for $250 per night. Hell, want to escape from NYC and do a little overlanding in the Adirondacks? Here’s a new 2020 Winnebago Revel 4×4 you can rent for $450 per night. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to change our fall foliage plans.
