Over the past year or so, Volkswagen has shelled out a decent chunk of change (read: billions of dollars), especially to the American public and government, as well as lawyers and litigators. You may have heard about it. Then, late last year, Volkswagen unveiled a new three-row, seven-passenger SUV, tragically and aptly named Atlas, which is aimed squarely at the American market in hopes of regaining some credibility.
And now, VW is doubling down on its new Americana-mobile with Atlas Weekend Edition. Based on the top-trim Atlas SEL with a 3.6-liter VR6 engine and all-wheel-drive, the Weekend Edition comes with all available options as standard. Think of it as Volkswagen’s attempt at a Land Cruiser.
Along with all the interior options, including wifi connectivity, tablet mounts for the passengers in the second row and a cargo divider for the family pet, the Atlas comes standard with roof bars and an expandable 17.7-cubic-inch Urban Loader cargo box. So, as the name suggests, the Weekend Edition encourages you to get the family together and put those kayaks to use, far from the reaches of the city, which sounds pretty ideal.
The Atlas Weekend Edition looks like an incredibly promising SUV, but then again, promises aren’t VW’s srong suit. We’ll have to wait until later this spring, to find out if the Atlas holds up.
