How do we know Dodge has a sense of humor? Stories of self-driving, sustainable and wi-fi laden cars from CES and NAIAS are still taking up real estate on home pages all over the internet, but Dodge just threw up two middle fingers to that in the form of the SRT Challenger Demon. Not many details are known at this point, but the SRT Demon site has clocks counting down the release of multiple videos, the first of which premiered today.
FCA passenger car chief Tim Kuniskis did say, “The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is conceived, designed and engineered for a subculture of enthusiasts who know that a tenth is a car and a half second is your reputation.” What that means exactly, no one is really sure, but a street-legal, drag strip–focused monster is probably a safe bet.
An AWD SRT Demon isn’t out of the question, since the Challenger GT seemed to have a warm reception. When the Hellcat initially hit the roads, it was 300+ horsepower clear of anything else in its category, and more than most supercars. Now we have a 650 horsepower Camaro on the way and an 800 horsepower Shelby Mustang Super Snake. So, AWD would make plenty of sense; 1000 horsepower isn’t out of the question.
The final countdown clock coincides with the 2017 New York Auto Show, so you can bet we’ll be right there when this beast is unveiled. And if the actual specs are as over the top as the announcement trailer, any sensible predictions at this point will seem tame by comparison.
