When Ferrari announces a special-edition car, you pay attention. The legendary Italian doesn’t settle for commemorative sticker package and special paint; when Ferrari celebrates, they redesign an entire car. Last year, the brand celebrated 60 years in North America with the F60 America; now, Ferrari is marking 50 years in Japan with the frankly stunning J50.
Based on the 488 Spyder and taking styling cues from the Ferraris that first landed on Japanese shores, the J50’s design calls back to the best mid-engine Ferrari V8s of ’70s, ’80s and ’90s with custom wheels, quad-taillights and a black “water line” reminiscent of the 308, F40 and F50.
Though the J50 uses the same 3.9–liter turbo-V8 as the 488 Spyder, it did get a 20 horsepower bump, and the retractable hard top has been replaced by a removable targa roof.
Like the F60 America, only 10 examples of the J50 will be made. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but knowing Ferrari, every J50 has likely been spoken for, and likely all by Japanese customers. But who knows — maybe we’ll see one at next year’s Ferrari World Final.
