The Electric Car for the People

No $35,000 car has ever generated the kind of excitement that the Tesla Model 3 has. Then again, no $35,000 car is as poised to change the auto industry. At least 215 miles of range, a 0-60 time no slower than 6 seconds and a proposed 500,000 units made per year — these are huge promises on behalf of Tesla and numbers unprecedented for an electric car of its price tag. If Tesla can deliver on these promises, it could just make the luxury electric car a reality for the motoring masses.

Roboracers

A new racing series will join the Formula E bill for the 2016/17 season. Dubbed “Roborace,” it’ll pit a field of autonomous racers against each other. Former Bugatti designer Daniel Simon has been appointed to design the cars, and his first concept for the series reveals an entirely different take on aerodynamics.

Volvo’s Polestars Get a New Heart

Volvo is refreshing the Polestar versions of its S60 sedan and V60 wagon. The new unit replaces the old 345 horsepower straight-six engine with a worked-over version of Volvo’s 2.0-liter Drive-E engine (used in the Volvo XC90) tuned to produce 365 horsepower.

Rent-a-Racer

It’s been 50 years since Ford, Shelby and Hertz devised the original GT350-H, a special version of the standard GT350 rented exclusively through Hertz. To celebrate the anniversary, Ford, Shelby and Hertz are at it again with the Shelby GT-H, a black-and-gold special-edition Mustang GT with additional performance parts bolted on. Only 140 units will be rented out through Hertz.

Rosberg Extends Lead

Vettel wasn’t able to make the grid after an engine failure on the warm-up lap. After a hectic turn, one Hamilton was on a list of drivers that took damage. Rosberg, along with Kimi Raikkonen and the two Williams took advantage of the chaos. Raikkonen made a late-race attempt to catch Rosberg, but to no avail. Arguably, the bigger story is Romain Grosjean and his Haas landed a heroic fifth place, besting veteran teams in only their second race.

Marquez Masters Argentina

Even after compulsory pit stops, Marquez dominated the Argentina GP with a lead of 7.6 seconds over Valentino Rossi. It would have been two Ducatis following Marquez home if it weren’t for the fact that Iannone and Dovizioso came together on the second-to-last lap.
