For better or for worse, we’re living in an era of very safe car design: smooth and simple lines make for handsome (albeit occasionally dull) shapes that, in some cases, are almost indistinguishable from one another. Combine that with the fact that most engine options are small, gasoline-powered turbocharged engines, and you have a market full of cars that follow a simple formula. That’s okay, because we live in an era of cars with excellent capabilities, but there’s something to be said about the cars that stick out like a sore thumb — strange-looking, almost illogical vehicles that dare to go against the grain. We picked five of our favorites. Odd as they may be, their endearing qualities make them great everyday cars with loads of personality.
Volvo S60 Cross Country

The “off-road SUV/car” isn’t entirely unheard of. The AMC Eagle was the first to do it in the 1980s, while Subaru offered off-road versions of its Legacy during the ’90s and 2000s. But that’s really it, and aside from some devout cult followings, these cars were not popular or successful. Thus, when Volvo announced it would be doing a lifted, Cross Country version of their compact executive S60, it raised a few eyebrows. Essentially, it’s just an S60 with some extra body cladding and a solid 7.9 inches of ride height. Oh, and it’s one of the few cars you can still buy with a five-cylinder engine. Strange, sure, but how else could you potentially take a luxury sedan off-roading?
Engine: 2.5-liter turbocharged inline five-cylinder
Transmission: Geartronic six-speed auto
Power: 250 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque
