More than a few cars debuted at NYIAS including a mouth-watering targa-top MX-5, the Audi R8 Spyder and a convertible Camaro ZL1. And as if all the high-octane open-top motoring wasn’t enough, there was a handful of classics peppered throughout this year’s show floor.
Hyundai’s new luxury sub-brand has come out swinging with a 3-Series-fighting hybrid concept. If its bold design and claimed performance make it to production, the luxury sports sedan market may have a new contender.
Hot on the heels of the ZL1 coupe announcement, Chevy pulled the covers off a topless ZL1 at NYIAS. It has the same supercharged 640 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque as the hardtop and will also get a six-speed manual standard, and Chevy’s new 10-speed automatic as an option.
A US judge gave Volkswagen until April 21 to come up with a fix for the diesel engines affected by the emissions cheating software. The total count is around 580,000 vehicles with ‘defeat devices’ and near 500 civil lawsuits against Volkswagen, at this time.
The Hybrid Air Vehicles Airlander 10 was finally unveiled, fully assembled. At 302 feet long, the Airliner 10 bests the Airbus A380 (the world’s biggest passenger jet) for length by 65.5 feet. Its carbon fiber, Kevlar and Mylar hull holds just over 1.2 million cubic feet of helium. With four 325 horsepower V8 diesel engines, the Airliner 10 can reach 16,000 feet and has a top speed of 91 mph.
