Gentlemen, This Is the New Toyota Land Cruiser

The 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser has just been unveiled, and, even though it may not look like a big departure form the last generation, there are big changes and a few firsts.

Not many automobiles can command the cult following the Toyota Land Cruiser enjoys. It’s an understated off-roader that competes with the likes of the Land Rover for luxury, and Jeep for capability. And now, Toyota looks to continue the overland icon’s success with the unveiling of the 2016 Land Cruiser.

The Land Cruiser wins its adoring fans by performing incredibly in harsh off-road conditions while wrapping its occupants in the warmth of un-compromised luxury. There’s only one version available, with no options listed; all accoutrements come standard, as is Land Cruiser tradition. Full-time 4WD, limited-slip center differential, Active Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control make sure the Land Cruiser is more confident than ever over the rough stuff. The Kinetically Dynamic Suspension System works in conjunction with the Multi Terrain system to seamlessly turn the new Land Cruiser from rock-crawling monster to tame grocery-getter. Under the hood, Toyota has bolted in a 5.7-liter V8, good for 401 lb-ft of torque, available at a lowly 3,600 rpm, and 381 horsepower, giving the Land Cruiser a max towing capacity of 8,500 pounds. Coupled to the engine is an eight-speed automatic, with optional manual control — a first in Land Cruiser history.

In the looks department, the 2016 Land Cruiser has only had a minimal re-sculpting, but over the decades, the Land Cruiser has never been one for drastic superficial changes. The imposing, powerful presence of the last-generation Land Cruiser has carried over with a new front grille, bulges in the hood and projector-beam LED headlights making a debut in a redesign of the icon’s profile. A similarly minimalist approach was taken to redesigning the back end, but the light-tube design and LED brake lights are a welcome modern touch.

Pricing for the 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser hasn’t been announced yet, but expect it to be in the realm of $80,000.
