Subaru first broke into the EV market back in 2022 with a compact SUV known as the Solterra.

Codeveloped with Toyota, the model shared the same platform as the bZ4x before gaining features like standard all-wheel drive, higher ground clearance and Subaru X-Mode for improved off-road chops.

Subaru then followed it up with the Trailseeker, its second all-electric offering, but it seems that the Japanese automaker has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

That’s because Subaru has just announced a third EV, dubbed Uncharted, and it’s set to be the company’s smallest and sportiest crossover yet.

Uncharted territory

Subaru bills the Uncharted as “the first Subaru all-electric compact crossover,” highlighting its “fun-to-drive nature” and adventure-ready capabilities.

While an EV crossover in and of itself is nothing new, the model promises to be a unique offering compared to other Subarus.

Most notably, it will give buyers the option of a front-wheel drive Subaru for the first time in years. Across the brand’s lineup, you’ll find the sporty BR-Z to be the only other model that doesn’t feature Symmetrical all-wheel drive as standard.

Subaru isn’t breaking new ground with the Uncharted, but the availability of an optional front-wheel-drive powertrain is a significant departure from the rest of the brand’s lineup.

In the case of the upcoming Uncharted, Subaru will be building a select number of entry-level Premium versions with a single electric motor at the front axle. Though the trim level is slated to occupy in at the lowest price point in the Uncharted lineup, it’s nevertheless set to deliver some respectable performance with 221 horsepower and an estimated 300 miles of range.

Subaru also claims that the 74.7-kWh battery is capable of fast charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes.

Small but mighty

As a more compact alternative to other Subaru EVs, the Uncharted measures nearly seven inches shorter than the Solterra, and Subaru states that the turning radius is nearly identical to that of the Crosstrek.

However, don’t discount the crossover based on its smaller stature — behind the second row, the Uncharted will provide more than 25 cubic feet of cargo space. Moreover, Subaru will be equipping the model with a 14-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, dual wireless chargers and a suite of driver-assist technologies as standard.

In the case of the higher-spec Sport and GT trims, Subaru will be giving the Uncharted some serious power under the proverbial hood. The addition of a second electric motor at the rear axle will enable up to 338 horsepower through Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. Each spec will also benefit from “specifically tuned suspension components” to provide for more responsive and terrain-optimized driving.

On the road, this means that the quickest Uncharted models will be able to rocket from 0-60 mph in less than five seconds. That’s some blistering acceleration for a Subaru crossover— especially when you consider that 0-60 mph for the Subaru WRX (or even the BR-Z) takes all of 5.4 seconds or more.

More on the horizon

Though Subaru hasn’t yet revealed pricing or full specifications for the Uncharted lineup, it has teased some of the differences between each model.

For instance, the Uncharted Sport will add X-MODE Dual-Mode, as well as a heated steering wheel, water-repellent upholstery and a panoramic monitor. As the top-of-the-line trim option, the GT will get a panoramic moonroof, a Harman Kardon sound system, vented seats and other premium features.

While it might not be breaking new ground in the EV segment, the Uncharted is a bold step for Subaru. Small, sporty and stylish, it’ll go on sale in early 2026.
