The concept of the SUV owes its existence to a number of pioneering vehicles. For even though early examples like the Chevrolet Suburban were undeniably utilitarian in their abilities, it wasn’t until the arrival of the Ford Bronco that the body style really became known for the fun factor that has made it so popular to this day.

In fact, Ford was the first to coin the term “sports-utility,” as the brand formally introduced the classification upon the launch of the first-gen Bronco in August 1965. Now, with 60 years having passed since the icon first hit the market, the Blue Oval felt that there was good cause for celebration — meet the Bronco 60th Anniversary Package.

Heaped with heritage

As is to be expected of a release celebrating such an important milestone, this special-edition Bronco boasts numerous heritage-inspired touches.

Along with some 60th Anniversary decals and commemorative Bronco badging, it also features a special wheel design, a fresh grille and the choice of some unique colorways. In doing so, the package pays homage to some historical Bronco aesthetic elements.

For instance, the Vermilion Red center caps on the Gravity Gray wheels echo the hubcaps found on the 1966 Bronco. Meanwhile, the Wimbledon White paint is a color that Ford offered extensively in the 1960s — be it on its Bronco SUV or its Mustang muscle car. In combination with the Warm Alloy paint on the grille, it makes for an undeniably old-school look, though there’s also the option of a Ruby Red body if you want something with more flash.

That’s not all. Inside, the Bronco 60th Anniversary Package features further unique touches in the form of some embossed logos on the seatbacks and some special Alpine stitching. There’s even a set of Bronco Red accents on the instrument panel and grab handles to tie the look together.

Upgrades abound

All too often, these kinds of packages are strictly appearance-based. Thankfully, however, Ford has managed to pay proper tribute to the introduction of the “sports-utility” term with the Bronco 60th Anniversary.

That’s because the option is only available on Broncos equipped with the Sasquatch package. Though based on the Outer Banks series — available with an EcoBoost four-cylinder or V6 engine — it comes laden with off-road upgrades from the factory.

Beyond giving the Bronco Sasquatch its HOSS 2.0 Suspension system, the brand specs the model with its advanced four-wheel drive system, a more aggressive final drive ratio and electronically locking front and rear differentials. Together, Ford says that these features improve stability and grip while making for a more dynamic feel in dangerous terrain.

Top it off with standard running boards, new A-pillar grab handles and a fresh Wimbledon white rear tire cover design, and you’re left with a package that doesn’t just look the part — it performs, too.
