The Explorer is Ford’s midsize, three-row crossover — and it’s an immensely important vehicle. The Explorer was Ford’s second-best selling vehicle behind the F-150 in 2023 and the best-selling exclusively three-row crossover in America. You could even make a case — looking at historic sales — that the Explorer is the most important SUV of all time.
Ford has just unveiled the new Explorer, which is arriving for the 2025 model year. It is not an all-new SUV, but it does bring some significant changes and enhancements for buyers to consider.
Here’s what you need to know about the 2025 Ford Explorer.
The 2025 Explorer offers two familiar engine options
The new Explorer has two gas engine options, but both are familiar. The base 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four — which Ford is calling new — delivers 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. The upgrade 3.0-liter turbo V6 jumps up to 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque on fancy gas. Rear-wheel-drive comes standard, with all-wheel-drive available.
It’s possible Ford could bring back the Explorer Hybrid at some stage. But for now, Ford is focusing on providing that option for police interceptors, not civilians
The Explorer comes in four trims … for now
Ford offers the 2025 Explorer with four trim options, each with a unique grille. Platinum is the high-end luxury trim; ST is the sporty trim; ST-Line offers the ST appearance but with the smaller 2.3-liter engine instead of the 3.0-liter motor; Active is the base model. Ford also strongly hinted at the launch (but did not confirm) that an off-road-oriented Timberline trim would return later in the year.

Ford is simplifying the Explorer’s choice of build options
Ford is attempting to reduce the build configuration complexity for the new Explorer to cut costs and provide a less overwhelming buying experience. More features — for example heated front seats and the new 13.2-inch touchscreen — come standard on all models. Other popular options will be available in packages rather than à la carte.
Ford now offers BlueCruise on the Explorer
The 2025 Ford Explorer now receives the brand’s BlueCruise hands-free driving technology with features like lane change assist and in-lane repositioning. BlueCruise is available on every trim above Active. Buyers can purchase a three-year plan upfront, or monthly and yearly plans after a 90-day free trial.

The Explorer debuts Ford’s new digital experience
Ford is launching the all-new Ford Digital Experience with the 2025 Explorer. The touchscreen is horizontal, not vertical. Google Maps is integrated as the native navigation system. Ford is also offering Google Assistant, Alexa and a suite of apps and entertainment options (for when you’re parked). You can even connect a Bluetooth controller to play games.
Unlike General Motors, Ford is still offering customers wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

How much does the 2025 Ford Explorer cost? When will it arrive?
Ford confirmed a starting price of $41,220, which includes both the starting MSRP and the mandatory destination and delivery charge. Ford says 2025 Explorers will hit dealers sometime in the second quarter of 2024.
