At the University of Washington, a small group of researchers is hoping to change the way we tune the world out. The team has developed new deep-learning algorithms that can allow the user to pick what sounds filter through their headphones. So while traditional noise-canceling headphones simply erase all loud sounds, this new system can allow certain sounds (like a sudden car honk, a baby crying or even birds chirping) to come in. Fans can read more about the fascinating technology, which requires the program to filter sound in real time (and thus process a sound in less than a hundredth of a second) here.

Today we’re taking a look at Bremont’s new limited edition dive watch, MAAP’s new waterproof cycling layers and Bearaby’s new Warmables collection. This is Today in Gear.

The new Lectric XP 3.0 takes the brand’s award-winning foldable eBike design to a new level. The upgraded 1,000-watt Peak Rear Hub motor is quieter and packs more torque, allowing you to tackle adventurous terrain. New pedal-assist tech boosts the XP’s efficiency, extending its range up to 65 miles. But all that distance would be nothing without comfort: New front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, added suspension and newly optimized gearing make for a smoother, safer ride so your adventure can last longer.

Cozy Up with Merino Wool Base Layers

While it can be tempting to slip on the same cotton long johns you’ve worn (and worn out) for years, it’s probably time to switch to a more premium set. Luckily, Mack Weldon has made it easy to build a perfect bottom layer, with a trio of new Tech Merino Picks. Fans can find boxer briefs ($48), long johns ($88) and a long sleeve crew neck tee ($98) all made from a soft, moisture-wicking blend of merino wool and lightweight modal.

The Waterman Apex II ($5,150) is a 43mm stainless steel dive watch powered by an automatic movement that boasts a 50-hour power reserve. The watch was tested by ‘big wave surfer’ Laird Hamilton (who helped pioneer tow-in surfing and hydrofoil boarding), and features a matte black dial adorned with a shark fin motif. Limited to 350 pieces, the watch is now available for purchase.

MAAP Unleashed the Atmos Range

This new collection of ‘featherweight’ jackets and vests is designed to keep you dry in all conditions. These pieces are the brand’s lightest, and most packable, outerwear to date and each is crafted from a breathable Pertex Shield fabric to achieve a 20K waterproof rating (meaning it can keep you dry in heavy rain and even wet snow). Fans can shop the sleek Atmos Jackets ($345) and Atmos Vests ($300) at the link below.

Finally, the Calmer ($69) is an ergonomically designed weighted neck wrap that can provide warm, calming relief to your neck, back and shoulders.
